Quarantine gaming - what to play when you're bored

How are you doing, guys? It’s Foksey here!

I’m gonna be honest with you guys, the situation in our world today is most unpleasant. Most of us are required to stay at home and that's for many days to come. But, on the bright side, we see there is a huge surge in gaming activity across the world. Which is great!

For example, if we just look at the Steam gaming platform alone, we can see that it set a new record for online users. That's 24 million people online at the same time with over 7 million people active in-game! I bet that there are tons of folks that are just getting into gaming for the first time due to the pandemic. And yes, it really helps our industry and consequently us as a company.

So, in light of the above, I’ve decided to share some of my thoughts with you on games that can be enjoyed while everyone is on lockdown. A cool thing about the games I’m about to go over is that many of them have some online features implemented, which will help you socialize with other players in a time of global loneliness. So, let's get into it!

Here are my 3 video game recommendations for you guys that you can enjoy on lockdown.

#1 APEX LEGENDS

Apex Legends is the first awesome game on our list that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. It's a battle-royale type game where all events occur on a large map with 20 teams with 3 members in each time fighting each other to see who will be the last one standing. Additionally, the game will soon have a 2 man team mode (this could already have been launched by the time of writing). Apex LFG system forces you to play with someone else in your team, you simply can't play the game alone as there is no solo mode, yet. ~~ Some of you may not be so appreciative of that, but on the other hand, it’s great for socialization! If you’re playing with random teammates, simply enable voice chat functionality and community with others. Plus, this is very important for your in-game success. You also have the option of inviting your IRL friends to Apex Legends, since it's a free-to-play game there shouldn’t be an issue with that. Trust me, you guys will love this game.

And last but not least, if you really want to know how to be good at Apex Legends, I recommend you to think about working with one of our PROs. At Legionfarm Group, Apex is our main game for our Play with a PRO service which allows anyone to hire a pro player in various games for personal skill and game quality improvement. Feedback regarding our Apex coaching service is highly positive, with every player learning something new from one of our PROs.

In terms of overall gameplay, Apex is quite a simple game. First, you need to choose one of many characters, they’re called Legends here. There’s plenty of them and they all have their own different and unique abilities. New players start off with a starting pack of unlocked legends. But don’t worry, this isn’t some lame starter pack as it already includes all of the most popular Legends of the professional cybersports scene. You can find out more about these Legends in our blog here.

So, this is how the game goes: first you pick your Legend, you then get airdropped together with your team onto the map, you grab some loot (armor, helmet, some weapons, upgrades, consumables, and of course, grenades) and you try to stay alive for as long as you can or kill as many other squads as your heart desires and skill permits. And in the end… Well congrats, you are the champion! :)

And to be honest, you can pick any of the battle-royale type games out there in the market such as PUBG, Fortnite, Warzone, and others and have a blast on lockdown. All of them are great titles for socializing and finding new in-game friends :)

#2 DAUNTLESS

Ever hear of the Monster Hunter game series? Dauntless is a free-to-play session-based MMO revolving around hunting badass monsters together with your friends. This game is a blast.

So, here's the game's story: Earth as we know it has split and scattered into forming a lot of big floating islands. Sounds… not so bad actually, right? And what if I told you about the behemoths? These are large and dangerous creatures that are attacking the remnants of humanity, driving them all away to an island referred to as Ramsgate. And you? Well, you’re a new and fresh slayer ready to kick some behemoth ass together with your companions! Dauntless players can form a team of up to 4 to hunt a specific behemoth.

I’ll get you through the gameplay quickly: essentially, you start the game out with very basic equipment and a few behemoths that are unlocked for the hunt. You choose the behemoths you want to slay, and after some matchmaking, your party of 4 is ready to head out. You’re going to fly to the island housing the behemoth. Once you land on the island, you need to spend some time locating the behemoth, as the island is quite big and it can be hiding anywhere. Friendly tip - listen to the environment. A random roar can reveal to you where the behemoth is hiding. Once you’ve found it, throw up a signal rocket [hold C by default], and so, the fight begins! Fighting behemoths is kind of Dark Souls-like. You have to attack using your mouse buttons, dodge attacks by rolling in and out and use consumables to take the beast down and survive.

Once the behemoth is slain, you’ll get some loot. Scales, claws, fur, and so forth. Once you return to Ramsgate you can lose your acquired loot to craft behemoth-themed armor and weapons which will allow you to battle stronger monsters. So, basically, you pick the behemoth to slay, select your weapons and armor, slay and repeat! It sounds simple, but it's actually not. This game is a total blast to play with buddies.

I highly recommend Dauntless for any company of friends who are looking to have some fun in an online game :)

#3 THE BORDERLANDS SERIES

An unexpected one I bet. But yes, Borderlands is a shooter and series of great games for when you’re forced to stay at home. I’ll let you in on a little secret, the Destiny series concept drew inspiration from Borderlands. If I were to describe borderlands in 3 words, I’d say, “Cooperative Diablo-like shooter”.

The Borderlands series consists of 4 games atm: Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Borderlands Pre-Sequel, and Borderlands 3. All of these games are expanded with various DLC’s too. There's also the Tales from the Borderlands game by Telltale, but I’m not including that one here (it’s great, but there's no online element to it).

Really, I'd recommend you to check all 4 of them out. Seriously, they’re all great! I’m playing the original Borderlands atm alone and still enjoying it. Oh, and by the way, you can go offline at any time you want to enjoy it alone, which is a pretty cool feature. But these titles truly give you their all when you play with other people - the game becomes more challenging and at the same time more fun! Don’t get me wrong, the Borderlands series is enjoyable solo, but when you’re co-oping with others it's even better.

But what's the story behind the Borderlands universe? The story takes place sometime in the future, in a time when interplanetary travel is possible. In the game you’ll come to know of something called the Vault, there are tons of rumors surrounding it and it's hidden somewhere in the universe. You’ll definitely want to go out looking for it because the Vault can give you everything you'd desire in your life - money, fame, men/women, power, and so forth. Once this rumor turned into legend, it gave birth to vault hunters. Your character is a vault hunter whose main goal is to find the Vault. I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination :)

As I mentioned before, Borderlands is a shooter at its core. The game's main feature is that every gun you’ll come across is randomly generated. There are over a bazillion gun combinations in the game. Seriously though, you’ll never find 2 identical weapons, unless we're talking about a fixed boss drop item.

All characters have their own talent trees, not only can you pick one of the vault hunters, but you can also build them throughout the game in custom ways. The diversity this game provides is simply amazing! That's not mentioning that you can carry up to 4 equipped weapons at a time, which further expands on the endless customization you and your friends can enjoy. It’s all about options with Borderlands.

I recommend checking out all of the Borderlands titles, it’s best done in chronological order too. It’ll take some time, but I’m sure you and your friends will love it! I promise you that :)

I hope these game recommendations were helpful and will make getting through your lockdown life a bit easier. Heck, you’ll probably come out of it with some choices of what to play after! And remember friends, stay healthy and stay happy, we’ll all get through this! Take care!

Foksey out!
